The hidden video camera, sometimes known as a “granny cam”, strikes again. The family of a 90 year old resident at Arden Courts, in Philadelphia, installed a hidden granny cam as a precautionary measure based on care their loved one had received previously. When looking at the recording, the family was shocked at the type of treatment received, and Police say the resident cold be seen crying for help during several incidents. After turning over the video to both Arden Courts and the police, the 36 year old employee was both fired and charged with simple assault.
There have been many recent arrests and news stories emanating from situations where family members are so desperate that granny cams are installed. Going to the lengths of placing a hidden camera in the room is a step that a family should not have to take. Abuse and neglect is a scary part of nursing homes, the trust that the facility will care for your loved one is often shattered. When selecting a potential nursing home, ask if you would be able to possibly install a video camera in your loved ones room. The video camera in this woman’s room potentially saved her life. Her family was able to witness the abuse first hand and in turn was able to stop it from happening again. Not everyone is so lucky to have a camera in his or her room.
